First Time Renting a Self Drive Car? 7 Mistakes to Avoid

First rentals go wrong in predictable ways. Almost every delay or awkward conversation at handover traces back to one of a handful of avoidable oversights.

Here are the ones worth knowing about before your first self drive booking in Pune.

1. Showing a photo of your licence instead of the original

Handover happens in person and the licence has to be original and valid. A screenshot will not do. Keep both the licence and a government ID in the same pocket before you leave the house.

2. Not walking around the car at pickup

Take two minutes and circle the car. Photograph any scratch, dent or scuff you can see, and check the fuel level. That record is what protects your deposit at return, and it takes less time than reading this section did.

3. Choosing by price alone

The cheapest car is usually the right answer for one or two people in the city, and the wrong answer for five people with suitcases going to the airport. Decide the size first, then compare prices inside that size.

4. Forgetting what the deposit is for

A Rs 10,000 deposit is collected at handover and refunded after inspection, normally within 24 to 48 hours. It is not a fee and it does not get eaten by normal use. If something breaks, only the repair cost comes out of it.

5. Booking a daily rate for a long stay

Renting day by day for three weeks is the most expensive way to use a car. Monthly plans cost up to 70 percent less per day. If your stay is longer than a few days, price the monthly option before you commit.

6. Leaving the pickup until the morning you need it

Doorstep delivery can be timed, but the slots people want fill up first - early mornings, festival weekends, month ends. Book the car and the delivery window together, and if you have a dawn departure, arrange the pickup the evening before.

7. Not reading the return terms

Two rules cause most return disputes: the agreed return time and the fuel level. Bring the car back when you agreed, at the fuel level you collected it in, and the deposit process runs without a conversation.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most common first-time mistake?

Not doing a walk-around at pickup. Photographing the car and noting the fuel level before you drive off is the single habit that keeps returns smooth.

How long does verification take?

A few minutes. Licence, ID, deposit and a quick look at the car - that is the whole handover.

Can I extend my rental after booking?

Yes, subject to the car being available for the extra days. Confirm the extension before your original return time rather than after it.

What if I need to cancel?

The cancellation terms are set out on the terms page. Read them before booking so you know what applies to your dates.
